Community/Recreation Centers : Pasadena Convention Center Expansion & Addition |
Crosby Group provided complete structural engineering for the 234,000 square foot expansion of the Pasadena Convention Center. This project required demolition of an existing exhibit hall and parking structures, modification of a conference center, and new construction of two exhibit halls, parking structure, and ballroom. All activity was to be accomplished with minimum impact to the users.
The exhibit halls are built over loading dock and future meeting room space requiring long span construction capable of high live loading. The parking structure is designed and detailed for future expansion from four-level parking to a full five-level parking garage. This gives the owner flexibility to make use of a ground level portion of the new construction slated for future meeting rooms as parking at this time.
The ballroom is built over the space vacated by the below grade exhibit hall that is being replaced. Crosby Group coordinated existing retaining walls in this area with new retaining walls and floor framing in order to avoid conflicts with existing utilities and sub-grades in the surrounding adjacent city streets. A primary design challenge was to maintain operability of the exhibit hall facilities throughout construction. Crosby Group incorporated phasing sequences into the design to facilitate continued operations.
