St. Luke's Main Hospital Tower Seismic Evaluation |
|
|
|
Crosby Group was contracted by Sutter Health to assist their engineering consultant in developing
seismic retrofit schemes for their existing 185,000 square foot St. Luke’s Main Hospital Tower in San Francisco, California.
St. Luke’s Hospital, in order to continue to provide acute-care services, was required to be seismically upgraded to an Immediate
Occupancy level per California Senate Bill 1953, the California Hospital Seismic Retrofit Program. To address this mandate, Crosby
Group developed broad retrofit schemes that also accounted for the continual operation and occupancy of the facility. Sutter Health
then analyzed these schemes to develop cost/benefit analyses to ultimately determine their retrofit strategy.
Using 3-D computer modeling to perform an analysis of various seismic retrofit schemes, Crosby Group developed three schemes
that provided the necessary seismic upgrades while minimizing the disruption to the functionality of the hospital. Issues considered
in the schemes included construction noise levels, construction dust and debris, minimizing demolition of existing facades, as well
as economy of construction.
