Bixby Bridge Seismic Retrofit Peer Review |
|
|
|
Crosby Group was contracted by Caltrans to perform a seismic peer review
and retrofit design with a tight budget for this historic bridge. This effort included engineering review
of design documents, parallel analytical evaluation of the retrofit scheme, review of specifications, and
participation in the cost estimate preparation per Caltrans guidelines. This bridge, located on the
California Central Coast, is listed on the National List of Historic Landmarks.
The structure is a 20-span concrete bridge, with the middle eleven spans being supported on concrete arch ribs
founded at the base of the two main towers. The bridge framing consists of concrete beams and columns. We
worked closely with the engineer-of-record, Buckland & Taylor, to ensure that the retrofit complied with the
design criteria and we performed constructability reviews of the completed design. The final retrofit solution
maintained the budgetary needs of the client and the historic features of the bridge.
