Crosby Group provided a seismic investigation and evaluation of the building following the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. We performed a comparison of a standard retrofit to the implementation of dampers. A three-dimensional analysis of the structure showed that it was adequately designed yet had low global damping which caused prolonged shaking in the structure during the earthquake. The introduction of dampers proved to be the best and most cost-effective solution for this unique design problem.
First high-rise structure in the U.S. to be seismically retrofitted using passive energy dissipation devices.
